Thyroid Glands
Hi Doc
I have my thyroid tested annually and so far its come back NOT active however I have terribly noticeable swollen/enlarged glands. What causes swollen/englarged thyroid glands? Will this eventually become active? How will I know (what are the symptoms) if it does become active? How dangerous is this to my health. I'm suddenly very panicky about this and feel like I'm having difficulty swallowing but I think its psychological.

TJ, an enlarged thyroid doesn’t have to be over active. Your thyroid can become as big as a golf ball and still have normal or under active function. The best would be to have an ultrasound done if you want to know if it is enlarged or not. Good luck.
