Im 15 year old girl and am in Grade 9. I dont get along with the people in my grade as I find them very immature and I cannot relate to them on any level. I also dont have a good relationship with my parents as they want me to be some one Im not, even though most of the parents want their children to be like me. At the moment the person who I am closest to is one of my teachers, is this really weird? To me she is a sort of mother and a friend. All my peers think I am sucking up to her for good marks, but its not like that, its just without her I wouldn't have anyone. The only reason I am actually still here is because of her as she has inadvertently stopped me commiting suicide many times by simply smiling at me across the corridor. Am I really abnormal?

it is not that unusual for teachers to play an important supportive role in young people's lives. There are times when young people turn to other responsible adults in their lives because they don't feel able to speak to their parents.

However, it is important that as well as having the support of a teacher that you do not isolate yourself from your peers. It may even be because of how you see your teacher that you then view your peers as immature - which in comparison to your teacher they should and will be.

Its fine to have certain people in your life who you can turn to for support, but you also need to make strong links with peers, and maintain a healthy relationship with your parents as well, even if for now you feel quite distant from them. Otherwise you will develop an unrealistic view of your teacher as perfect when no-one is perfect.
