5th Metacarpal displaced fracture

I broke my hand 2 1/2 months ago while boxing. I had a 5th metacarpal displaced fracture of my right hand. I had a k-wire inserted and that was removed a week ago. I would like to know how long I have to wait to train fully again and if there are any precautions I need to know about.

Dear Colette

Fracture of the 5th metacarpal is called “Boxer’s fracture” and is very common in boxing and martial arts. A cast or splint should have been applied your hand to your forearm. You will wear this cast or splint for 4 to 6 weeks. You should have also been applying ice to the injury (over the cast/splint) for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for the first 2 to 3 days. You should have follow-up x-rays to ensure the bone has healed, before returning to contact activities (boxing). If you return to sport too soon you may worsen your injury, which could lead to permanent damage. Everyone recovers from injury at a different rate. Return to your sport or activity will be determined by how soon your hand recovers, not by how many days or weeks it has been since your injury occurred. In general, the longer you have symptoms before you start treatment, the longer it will take to get better.
You may return to your sport or activity when your hand has full range of motion without pain and has the same strength as the uninjured side. Your forearm and wrist muscles may also be weakened by being in the cast and therefore also need strengthening.
See a biokineticist for hand, wrist and forearm strengthening and range of motion exercises.
