Bunion
Hi, I have developed a bunion on my left big toe which is causing me much pain and discomfort. I find I get terrible cramps down the entire left side of my foot not only in the toe region. I have tried wearing different shoes but nothing helps walking in general whether I am wearing health sandals or bare foot causes pain. I want to go for the operation to have it removed but I am very nervous.
Is there anything I can do for temporary relief? I am going overseas in a months time and will be doing lots of walking.
Can I go for a cortisone (spelling???) injection? Would it help?
Also, can you tell me a little mor about the operation? Would I have to go into hospital under local anaesthetic or just a day clinic? What is the healing (more or less) time before I am back on my feet and wearing normal shoes again?
Thanks so much!!!

If you are in as much pain as you describe then the operation is your only way out and you must find an orthopaedic sureon with a specific interest in the foot and ankle. The surgeon will be able to recommend a quick fix for your overseas trip which may include a cortisone injection, orthotics, and maybe physio, all will help with the pain now but wont cure the condition, only surgery will.
To tell you about the operation is impossible save to say there are 120 different ways to skin this cat, and the surgeon has to treat each case on its merits, (that is why I say go to a foot and ankle specialist the experience is key)
The heaing is not less than six weeks for BONE healing and a few more weeks before you are out of pain, it depends on many variables and I would be irresponsible to tell you it will be like this or that, it really does depend on many things.
But it is a big op and more sucessful now than it was in the past. If your bunions are affecting your life then it is your best step
