cold sores on lips just won't go away

i have cold sores on my lips which do not want to disappear. my doctor tells me it's herpes. my doctor gave me a prescription for a cream which i did not buy. in fact i doubted whether it would actually work.

what kind of stuff would a naturopath recommend? it really affects the way i interact with people because i notice that sometimes they look at my lips and see two little cold sores and are probably thinking i'm a dirty little man (which i'm not)

please help.

Natural medicine does have some effective remedies that are anti-viral and effective in reducing outbreaks of herpes.
The most beneficial research has shown that using topical applications of Lemon Balm (melissa officinalis), Aloe vera, zinc ointment, Propolis can reduce outbreaks. Of these Lemon Balm would be the first choice. Contact a Naturopath or Pharmacist in your area to make up a herbal ointment for you and use during and after an outbreak, this will decrease further outbreaks.
As prevention supplementation with an amino acid Lysine has been found to be beneficial in some people, but this is not effective if only used during an outbreak.
In general it is also advisable to improve nutrition and lifestyle to promote a healthy immune function, so keep to a minimum the common sense immune stressors such as smoking, alcohol, refined foods, unhealthy fats; and ensure that fruits, vegetables, health fibre rich grains and good lean proteins form 80% of the diet, as well as follow a regular moderate exercise program.
