Dislocated shoulder
Hi Doc
My son, 17, plays high level rugby and he injured his shoulder a week ago. By what he is saying, it got dislocated and he managed to get it located back, just to injure it 5 minutes later and he left the field. We took X-rays and nothing broken or any dislocation vissible. He went for Physio last Thursday and will do so again this week where he will see a Bio keneticus there after. Although the shoulder improved, he says it is still sore if he lifts it in a cetain way. What is your suggestion on this info, has he torn ligaments or is it just bruising. Can he play rugby soon again or must he rest and if so for how long. Can the healing be experdited?
Thank you

Hi Johan

If a shoulder really was dislocated then there is often a sign seen on Xray, even though the shoulder is back in place. It may be worth reviewing them again.

If there is a rotator cuff injury only then that can be anything from strain to tears.
In that case it is worth strengthening the shoulder muscles so there is no imbalance ( one muscle being stronger than another.)

let him rest till there is minimum pain before playing. If the shoulder re-dislocates, surgery maaay be necessary.
