Not taking a divot is not a BAD thing

I think it was Jack Nicklaus who said he could hit a entire bucket of practice balls in a 1 foot by 1 area, thats how little divot he took.

The only thing I can think of is that your club head is getting ahead of your hands, this may be causing you to hit the ball thin and in the process lose distance

I wouldn't worry about the divot situation - You may just be a "picker" and thats not necessarily a bad thing.

The Pro's normally hit down a lot on the shot so they can control the ball more in the air/landing on the green. However when swinging like this if your swing is not consistent, it is very easy to hit a lot of shots FAT
