Leaking Heart Valve
My Mother is 76 and has a leaking heart valve, which is progressively deteriorating.

Doctors have told us that there is no cure and it is just a matter of time. Is this true?

Dear Phyl,

There is no medical cure for a leaking valve, but there is usually a surgical option.

However, whether surgery is possible or not in your mother’s case will depend on many other factors, such as her general state of health, ability to tolerate a long anaesthetic and being put on a heart-lung machine, presence of other medical problems such as kidney or liver problems, etc. Sometimes there really is no way to cure the underlying problem. However, that does not mean that she needs be abandoned. There is always some degree of treatment available to at least improve her symptoms to some extent. Please discuss this with her cardiologist.

Good luck.
