Hi Love,

All medical aids are open to everybody. So regardless of what you earn and your employment status you have the right to join any medical aid of your desire. You do need to remember the following though, even though there can be no discrimination in a medical scheme if you are older than 35 and have not been on a medical aid before the scheme is entitled to apply a loading. Furthermore they are entitled to apply a waiting periof of up to 3 months, which means that while you have to pay contributions for 3 months you will not be entitled to benefits during that perod.

A more important consideration however is affordability and you need to weigh up the relative benefits for a scheme against the cost of covering those benefits, and this is where schemes can differ considerably. If your earnings are gross and you do not have any dependants then you might want to consider a hospital plan initially which provides cover for major events but you will be required to cover the day to day events. As your personal status changes so then can you change your medical aid option in line with that.

Do make sure that the benefits you are getting are consistent with your expectations.
