MedSchemes neglect the travelling youth
Many young South Africans find themselves travelling all over the ever shrinking global village, working and exploring, and sharing their, our, culture.

When the December cold in London gets unbearable and the smell of braai from the south is luring with shimmering golden beaches, our future comes home for a week or a month -- to remind them who we are, and why we love who we are... but heaven forbid anything happens to them while they are here, because NO MEDICAL AID WILL COVER THEM.

SADLY - travel insurance (purchased in any country) will not cover you in your country of citizenship (that being the RSA). Even if you approached a big monolith of a med scheme here, and you tell them: I am 27, healthy, non smoker with a PhD and thus a low health risk, bla bla they laugh at you and tell you --- sorry but you have to pay R500 - R1000 per month for 3 months and after that you will be covered

... but I am only here for 3 weeks! --- well, then uhm eh ... well our cover is really good after the three months we stole your money....

bla bla bla -- it is disgraceful that our youth have to come home and GAMBLE with their life(s) and livelihood...

How can our government allow a situation where it is practically impossible to get insured in your OWN country for a short period? Even if it is at a premium.

Isn't there anything we can do about this atrocious state of affairs?

Medical Schemes registered in South Africa are goverened by legislation and regulations. Schemes provide cover for members living in South Africa.

It could be possible to obtain cover for a short period of time from day one, depending on the health of the applicant.
