Mypro Cardiac Fibrosis
Please could you explain what this desease is and what causes it. I would also be happy to know what the symptoms are and if easily diagnosed - if so, is there treatment?
Thank You
Thank You
Dear Josee,
Myocardial fibrosis means that normal heart muscle tissue is replaced by fibrous (scar) tissue. This cannot function as heart muscle does, so the heart eventually fails if large areas are affected.
The causes of this are varied, from virus diseases to toxins in the broad sense of the word. Diagnosis is made by taking a biopsy of the heart tissue and looking at it under a microscope. There is no treatment which can reverse the process, but removing any known causes may halt the progression of the disorder. In severe cases, under specific conditions, a heart transplant may be the only solution.
