Can HIV be transmitted by being pricked with a solid needle or thorn?

Many thanks

Hi Dave!

Chances of transmission with a solid needle are much lower than with hollow ones. I would nevertheless not put it at absolutely 0% and recommend a test.

Hollow needles store a quantity of blood which carries the virus and enables it to survive a little longer. A solid needle that had been exposed to air for longer than a minut after coming in contact with contaminated blood should be ok.
