Allergic to latex
Dear Doc, My girlfriend and I have been together for 3 years now. She is allergic to latex. She takes Mercilon regularly. We make love +- 5 to 7 times per week. Some sites suggest that the pill with perfect use, causes less than 1/100 women to fall pregnant. We really don't want children, and condoms are out of the question. From a practical point of view, as is your own, what are the odds of her falling pregnant? How many people that do take the pill with "perfect use" really fall pregnant. She is 20, and we both smoke. P.S. would withdrawal make the odds less?

Thanx a stack,
Yours truly,

Worried, the pill is the safest form of contraception after abstinence and surgery. The chance of falling pregnant is not 1% but less than 1/100 women years. If it is 1/100 women years, it means that a couple using the pill would have an “evens” chance of one pregnancy by the end of a 100 years of fertility. The problem is that no one is able to say where in these 100 years the pregnancy will occur.
I know that it seems like this equals 1%, but you have to remember that a women usually has less than 40 fertile years. If you don’t want to go for surgery, the pill would be your best option. Good luck.
