ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT INJURY
HI DOC
25 YEARS AGO I GOT A KNEE INJURY FROM PLAYING SOCCER, I ALWAYS HAD TO WATCH HOW I STEPPED OTHERWISE MY KNEE WOULD POP. IVE ALWAYS BEEN AN ACTIVE PERSON, RUNNING (SHORT DISTANCE) AND CYCLING. WHEN EVER MY KNEE POPPED I WOULD JUST TAKE IT EASY FOR AWHILE UNTILL IT GOT BETTER, I TOOK A BREAK FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS AND HAVE JUST RECENTLY STARTED RUNNING AGAIN. FOR THE FIRST TIME IVE BOUGHT A KNEE SUPPORT. ITS LIKE DAY AND KNIGHT. I CAN ACTUALLY RUN WITHOUT FEELING ANY PAIN. IVE DONE 2 10KM RUNS AND A 21 KM RUN WITH NO PAIN IN MY KNEE AND NO POPPING OF THE KNEE. BUT A WEEK AFTER I RAN MY 21KM MY KNEE HAS SWELLED UP AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS FLUID AROUND THE KNEE. THERE IS NO PAIN. PLEASE COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT IS HAPPENING. I CAN NOT SEE A DOCTOR AS I HAVE NO MEDICAL AID AND MY FINANCIAL SITUATION IS NOT THAT GOOD. PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME? IVE ONLY BEEN RUNNING NOW FOR 4 WEEKS.

Robbie, it sounds like you’ve been overdoing it a bit. The problem is that if it is just fluid it should be OK, but blood may cause problems later on. The best would be to at least see your GP if it hasn’t cleared up by the time you receive this reply. Good luck.
