BIPOLAR MEDICATION WHILE PREGNANT
HI there, two years ago I had a nervous breakdown and was put on alot of medicatio. When i found out I was pregnant at 4wks, I stopped all my medication. I am now 10wks2days and realised I couldn't cope without my medication so I went and saw my physchiatrist yesterday. She put me back on Lilly Fluoxitine and aterax. The other medicine, Lamictin, she said that there is a small chance (0,1%) that the baby might have a cleft lip/palate due to the medication. She said I definately need the Lamictin, but now obviously I'm a bit worried. If anything were to be wrong with the baby, wouldn't it have already happened already. Because now the foetus is pretty much formed isn't it? I need the medication, but I don't want to the baby to have any deformities because of me. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Tammy

Thank you for visiting health24.com.

Lilly Fluoxitine and Aterax are relatively safe during pregnancies and should not cause any deformities to the baby. If you are worried about deformities, you should have a detailed ultra-sound at 16 weeks. Lamictin has such a small change for cleft lip/palate, that I will not worry about it.

Kind regards
