Hi Safarigirl,
Shingles and chicken pox is caused by the chicken pox virus (Varicella virus). The Varicella virus lives in the nerves of some people, "sleeping" there until their resistance/immunity drops, when it then infects the skin of that nerve distribution, causing herpes zoster or shingles. A person with shingles can give a child or non immune person chicken pox, but shingles won't cause shingles in other people.
Herpes virus usually causes oral or genital fever blisters.
