chronic cough in children
hi doc, I have a 4 yr old boy that has had an ongoing cough since he was about 6mos old. Ive taken him to the dr more times then i can count. They dont seem to know whats wronge with him. They tell me its normal in children. I have a hard time believeing that. Hes had an ultra sound on his heart. He does have one valve in his heart that is smaller than the other one. Hes had chest xrays, there fine. Im so frustrated, because he is always coughing. Its not continuous 24hrs a day. He has 5minutes without coughing then hell start coughing again for 5minutes. We give him Zyrtec 5mg/5ml syp (half a tsp 2x a day) perscribed by his pediatrition. they dont give us a diagnois, the medication just seems to help alittle. He doesnt have this cough all year long. It seems to be onset with a cold. He has a runny nose with this chronic cough but no other symtoms. Nitetime is really bad. He seems like he coughs constintly . Weve tried ashma inhaler (albuteral), cleriton. These havent worked. The best medication that only helps minimully is Zyrtec. Do u have any advise for me, or know who might. I feel so helpless, and dont know where to turn. If anyone has a similar situation and wants to email me id love to hear from you. Thank you dr. my email is

Concernedmommy, from this side of the screen it sounds like he is allergic and has asthma. Have you tried Singulair®? It’s a wonderful effective and safe drug that might just be the answer to all your questions. Ask your doctor to prescribe it – it should work within a couple of weeks. The other option would be to get a second opinion from a different paediatrician. Good luck.
