Citrus soda for Gout
Hi Dr,

My dad tells me that he takes Citrus soda for his Gout on his doctor's advice. What is Citrus soda (chemical name)? Nowhere on the Internet or in my pathophysiology books did I come across Citrus soda as a treatment for gout. I am wondering why his doctor doesn't put him on medication like allopurinol, which will reduce the level of uric acid in the blood?

Student, the main ingredients in Citro-Soda™ are sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, citric and tartaric acid. If he has only a slight tendency towards gout, alkalising his urine should increase the rate at which uric acid is excreted in the urine. Good luck.
