Is my toe broken?
Hi Cyberdoc

I don't have the finances to go the doctor at the moment. I knocked my little toe really badly on the weekend. It looked bruised within half an hour. Its very sore and I have padded it up so that I can wear a very soft shoe. I heard that they generally heal themselves - is this right? I can bend it although its pretty painful. I am limping obviously.

All I want to know is do they heal themselves or is this to be treated as a emergency and visit to the doc?

Thank you
Miss Toby Toe

Dear Toby Toe
If the toe is not obviously standing in a funny position, and does not make a scratchy noise when you press on it or move it, you could just bind it with sticking plaster to the toe next to it to keep it stable. They would only operate on the toe if the bone is grossly out of place and one can't put plaster of paris on, so the toe next to it becomes the "brace" in most cases. It will take a week or two to heal at least.
