Itchy rash on Fingers (Diabetic Patient)
Dear Cyberdoc

My father, aged 75, has Type 1 Diabetes. One of the symptoms he has is that his fingertips are constantly raw and itchy. If he tries to do any physical work his hands tend to bleed.

Do you have any advice for him?

Thank you

Sharon, it might be a sign that his diabetes is not well controlled or that he has advanced vascular problems. It might also be due to a superficial fungal infection, contact dermatitis, eczema, etc. the best would be for him to make sure he doesn’t expose his hands to chemicals like dishwashing soap, petrol, Handy Andy, etc, and to regularly use a moisturising hand cream. He should always wear gloves when his working in the garden etc. and make sure that he doesn’t injure them. If it doesn’t clear up, the best would be to see a dermatologist. Good luck.
