low cd4 count but healthy
Hi Doc

A friend of mine who is hiv+ went for a test like she usually does every six months. This time her cd4 count was 37 & viral load extremely high. This person doesn't show any sign of being positive, she has never lost weight or had any aids related illnesses. Her Dr thought something is not right & she went for a test again after a week. This time the cd4 count is 28.
Usually this happens to people who already have aids, how do you explain this ?

Her Dr suggested she starts ARV's but she refused. She also feels like her Dr doesn't know much about HIV.
Where in Pretoria can one find an HIV expert ?

Lulubel, I have to agree with her doctor that it not normal, but it is possible for a person to have a low CD4+ count and still not have AIDS. What it does mean though, is that she will be highly susceptible to opportunistic infections and the high viral load seems to suggest that the virus is starting to get the upper hand. If you mail me at, I’ll send you the details of someone in Pta that works with HIV+ people. Good luck.
