Hi Doc
My 70 year old mother has been in hospital for 2 weeks on antibiotics and nebulisers, as well a oxygen for double pneumonia. She also has a lung disease. Can you please tell me how long it will take her to recover. She looks well, but cant breathe well, nor walk around at all, she is also very shaky after using the nebuliser. Do we just take it that she is on mediation and wait it out or do we get a second opinion on the treatment that she is getting at present.

your advice would be most appreciated

Hallo Karen
It is almost impossible to predict how long it will take for her to recover, as it depends on her lung condition before she became ill, as well as on current lung condition as determined by lung x/rays and or lungfunction tests. The shakiness after the nebulizer may be an expected side effect of the beta stimulants that open up the airways. A Lungfunction test would tell you whether she still has areas of the lung that do not aerate well. Her doctor would be better able to give you an idea of her current progress.
