after effects of stopping alcohol
My dad has been 100% sober for 45 days now but has been very sick since then. He has not eaten for seven days now, nor can he go to the toilet. He cannot keep food down and is constipated and his stomach aches unbearably. The doctor said that his pancreas is detoxing and have given him antibiotics and tablets. Nothing seems to help. Is this common? What can he do to get relief?

Hi EJ,
Well done to your dad and family for persisting in the ugly business of going sober and breaking the hold the alcohol had over him. The specific problems would best be discussed with the doctor treating him, as, having examined your dad physically, he'd be in the best position to advice. He needs to eat, to get in some fluids, salts, and nutrition, so Zeena's dietary advice sounds about right, and well worth trying. Alcohol beats up one's stomach and can cause ulcers and irritation, as can vomiting ; the less he eats the less he would have to pass at the toilet --- but I wonder if his tablets might be adding to the constipation --- again, the doctor prescribing them would know.
