I am a gay man of 42 in South Africa, I have a problem with my temper. I often get very angry, when criticised or blamed or lied at or if I feel a person makes me out to be a liar(perceived or not) I seem not to be able to think before I react angrily to any of the above senarios. I have had this problem for as long as I can remeber, but lately it is becoming really BAD, it has made me feel real bad and depressed and I have gotten in to lots of trouble. I can’t seem to control it. I am planning couceling, BUT I need to know if there are specific medications to assist with the problem????????

I agree that being gay is surely not relevant here. And it's hardly unusual to feel anger when mistreated or lied to. What becomes problematic is when you say you find it hard to think before responding to such situations, and that you're getting into trouble in such episodes. Counselling is the main thing that would help ; most specifically CBT ( Cognitive-behaviour Therapy type counselling ) which aims at a very specific focus on your cognitions ( such as the automatic thoughts and assumptions which arise in such situations, testing them, and discarding those which are unhelpful and revising them to more useful responses ) and on their behavioural equivalents.
medication is less useful in dealing with anger problems, as Joanne implies, because traditional tranquillizers tend to not only sedate unhelpfully, but also are usually disinhibiting, like alcohol, which is very unhelpful. Sometimes some of the anti-epileptic meds may help reduce one's irascibility.
