Child tells lies constantly, child 7
My child is seven and he is constantly telling lies. It is as if he is so afraid of getting into trouble that he would rather lie about something than tell the truth. I am a single Mom and have tried different kinds of discipline and nothing seems to help. He seems to becoming more and more dishonest, the older he gets. I do not know which way anymore.
Dear Distressed Mom,
let's see what our other, more experienced moms have to suggest. Ling isn't an unusual problem with kids, especially, as you say, if they have some reason to fear the consequences of admitting the truth. Is he well and behaving normally in other ways, or is this part of a wider change in him ? Have you checked with his schoolteacher, whether he/she has noticed any problems with him there ? Maybe there's some faciliy through the school for him to see a counsellor to talk about this, or otherwise, would it be practical to arrange for him to see a child-psychologist for counselling >
