Paul - and I'm actually going to put in a new ceiling in my bedroom next year ;) For extra sound proofing since the noise from the flat above is driving me nuts some days.

CS - Mmmm. Now you've given me an idea. Presenting some training on DIY101 for women.

Module 1: Identifying the most common tools.
Module 2: Doing small electrical repairs.
Module 3: How not to be afraid of powertools. (Cause I sure as hell was in the beginning!)
Module 4: Using a powerdrill (by putting up your own shelf)

Then DIY102:
Module 1: Laying tiles.
Module 2: The dirty on plumbing.
Module 3: Doing those more advanced electrical repairs.
Module 4: Women can build too!

Actually, Liza, would that not be a potentially dramatic contribution to affirmation, liberation, empowerment, and all the other supposedly good stuff ? Usually they launch initiatives proclaiming such noble aims, which result in nothing more than a bunch of tacky T-shirts and a banquet for the fat cats to get sozzled. And open it to all similarly limited men, to show there's nothing sexist or gendrist in the plan. Should be great in its impact.
