Is my child ready for school?
My child will be 5 in January. Whilst the school says she should be starting grade r next year, the creche has advised otherwise. They say that children who start school at age 5 have problems coping, end up doing badly at school and have emotional problems. The teacher at creche said I should leave my child at creche until age six. They say at 5, children are not ready to do serious work and still want to play.

Please advise. I am just confused. Can I take my child for assessment to determine if she is ready for school? Is there some way that I can tell if she is? What do I need to look out for? Or is a child of 5 really not ready psychologically for school?
Please advise. Why can' t things be as easy as it was when we were little!

I dont see how I can answer this. The school is presumably basing their advice on their broad experience ; I dotn't know at all whether the creche has anyone actually qualified to make such an assessment or to give such advice. To make a sweping generalisation that kids who start school at 5 inevitably have problems, is naive and ignorant. As a matter of interest, I started at 7, and later skipped a grade, too, and don't seem to have been greatly harmed by it !
Tne creche teacher's comments sound ignorant over-generalisationz, but may help to keep up enrollmnent and profits at the creche ! An assessment of her actual readiness would give you a more objective basis for the decision.
