Dear CS,

My question is somewhat out of the ordinary. In your opinion can it be of help to write all your problems down in a journal? Can this help to overcome grief, as it is in my friend's case, who lost her husband in January. And would it help in my case: I am having a problem with having to live on my own for the first time in 50 years. I just feel I am not ment to live alone and I feel I don't belong any where any more. I also feel very stressed about the lack of finances right now. Would it help me to put all this down in a journal everyday? (Unfortunately my little townhouse if too small to take in a room mate).

Hello Emma,
here ae many people who believe that "journalling" as some of them call it, is indeed helpful to them --- it can help you to externalize some of your problems and how you feel about them --- to put this "out there" where you can look at it more manageably and less emotionally. Chelles approach sounds especially good. As well as working towards lists of things to be grateful for, I think it's also useful to periodically, maybe each week, make a To Do list, of ways of responding to the situations you describe --- things you can try out, experimenting with ways of helping yourself improve the situation you find yourself in.
And try getting involved in local activities -- churches, clobs, societies, charities --- it not only gives you something useful to do that can be very worthwhile, but you meet a nice type of person, too. And while your townhouse may be too small for a room mate, it's not to small for you to develop a fresh circle of friends.
