I would like to know how does one meditate? I have read that meditation is a good way to de-stress, is this true and how does one go about it?

Thank you.

Dear Jane,
yes, meditation is a useful way to reduce and manage stress, and some research has shown this. One can seek out any of a number of books that describe various methods of meditation, or seek out a counsellor who can teach one how to do it. It mainly consists of choosing a peaceful setting ( at first, eventually one can learn the skill of doing it anywhere, whenever needed ) and letting oneself relax deeply, both physically and psychologically, seeking feelings of calm ; not accepting the annoying little worries that may enter one's mind as one tries to relax, but swatting them away like flies, or ignoring them completely ; maybe concentrating on a sound ( soothing music or selected sounds ) or a word or phrase, either a prayer or one chosen because it is associated with a specially peaceful and calm place and time from your past experience or your nicest fantasies ; and letting oneself drift deeper into feeling relaxed and calm.
