Need Help with A-Depressants
My wife has just gone onto an Anti-Depressant and I wonder if you could help me with a few Questions and concerns.
1. How will her birth control and the Anti-Depressant work together? Are there any risks?
2. How, as husband, can I support her through this period? What will she go through?
3. Is there anything we should be doing?
Thanks for the help. I’m confused and any help will do.

Dear Husband, here goes. You do sound like an uncommonly concerned and empathetic spouse --- well done !
1. The birth control pill and the antidepressant can go together fine, without creating any additional problems. There should be no special risks.
2. She shouldn't need to "go through" anything worse than the depression she is already experiencing. All drugs, including antidepressants have some side-effects, which are generally worst in the first few weeks. Some people are troubled by them and need encouragement to persist, some barely notice them. Although she may start feeling better in some ways early on, one needs to remain on the antidepressants at proper dose for 3-4 weeks before experiencin the likely full benefits, so again, she may bnefit from some encouragement to continue on them especially in the early weeks. Otherwise, just the general level of sympathetic support, and being accessable for her to talk about hings if and when she wants to, will be great.
3. There's probably nothing more you two need to be doing, though you can ask her shrink specifically about that. If she were involved in speciic psychotherapy like CBT, there could be some homework assignments, but otherwise, she just needs to be patient, brave, and hopeful, with your encouragement.
