PANIC ORDER/ANXIETY Aropax, 12 years? Is it safe.
I have been on Aropax (20mg) medication for anxiety for 12 years. Is it safe??? I did wheen myself off, ending 14 December 2003, but a week ago I was told to go back onto the medication, as a result of rebound anxiety. My major concern is regarding the safety of using this medication over such a long period, and can I drink it for always????

Dear Panicky,
I suppose it really is easy to get panicky about panic, and anxious about anxiety. So far as we know, no really serous or common problems are described as having arisen from really long-term use of any of the modern antidepressants, including Aropax. That said, although such long-term use is not unusual in people with recurrent severe Depressions, it is much more unusual as a treatment for anxiety, which can often be better handled by other drugs, and, especially, by specific psychological treatments like CBT.
For a pure anxiety state, I have never had to consider keeping someone on an antidepressant like Aropax for so long. I wonder whether you might benefit from getting a second opinion from a fresh psychiatrist, who can re-assess you and take a fresh look at the situation, and advise whether alternative treatment might not manage to clear up the anxiety more comprehensively.
