Thanks CS &  Bob se meisie for the insight and explanations, about the argueing, I suspected it'  s his way of protecting himself. What can I do to help him though

Avoiding arguments as best you can, look for opportunities to discuss calmly these issues--- emphasizing what ( as much as you can find ) you LIKE about what he does, and reminiscen about how much you liked things he used to do --- encouraging him not to feel too bad about himself, to know that you value aspects of him which he could do more of, and not to see talking about such things as necessarily either an argument of a criticism of him
