dear doc

i have been living with schizophrenia for the past +/- 7 years. it was a difficult battle but i've been stable for a while now (3 years, it took 2 and a half years before i was diagnosed). i am on a very low dosage of zyprexa (2.5 mg). my doctor says it's only for "maintenance". there have been times when i just started to relapse (about twice or thrice) and my doctor just stepped up my meds a bit till i was 100% ok.

i get very emotional at times. sometimes over petty things. i get angry sometimes, but more often i get sad very quickly. i'll sometimes cry myself to sleep at night over petty things. i've only started experiencing this after entering into a relationship with my husband about 1 and a half years ago, and it was mostly because of (petty) things he said or did. we're now married for 4 months. i also experience this around the time i have to menstruate. before marriage it was practically for the whole month. sometimes there would just be a period of about 1 and a half weeks that i was emotionally stable. since i'm married and on the pill it's not that bad.

what i'd like to know is, is my problem only pms or is it related to my illness, or could it be some emotional insecurities that i have due to entering my first relationship, or is it a lack of assertiveness perhaps.

people often find it amusing when i tell them how i cry and cry over petty things, but it's really very distressing and depressing when i'm actually feeling sad enough to cry like that.

what do you suggest i do.

having one problem or illness, unfortunately, doesn't make one immune from having another. You can have ingrown toenails, and STILL get appendicitis. SO you could have prementrual tension or menstrually related depression, as well as the schizophrenia which sounds reasonably well controlled. Discuss these additional symptoms with your psychiatrist, and also explore whether there is anyone nearby who can provide proper CBT ( Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, as I have recently seen some research confirming that it can be helpful in specifically this sort of situation and even in schizophrenia itself. It helps one to manage one's thinking in more productive and fruitful ways.
