The sensation of absence from self
DearCybershrink
I sometimes, as a 49 year male, have the sensation of a circular hole in my solar plexus. It makes me feel timid and overpowered. It has been a part of my emotional experience for most of my life. It feels as if I am missing a 'component', even a sense of a 'soul' not present. I'v been for conselling over many years but it still persists. I have no idea what to make of it. My sense is that if I could just find a 'mechanism' to fill this 'hole' I would be one of the greatest people this country has seen. I think I am at that place where it has become impeartive to solve this issue.

Hello ecobof,
This is indeed a curious sensation you describe. It could be related to anxiety, it could have existential elements, and some such curious physical sensations can have a basis neurologically. responding to some of the gentler antiepileptic meds, or to antipsychotic meds. Counseling, in its milder forms, may not reach the important issues. I'd think your best bet would be to see a fresh re-assessment of the situation from a good local psychiatrist ( as a qualfied doc, better able to consider neutological as well as psychological elements ) and discuss treatment options on the basis of the finding s of such a comprehensive assessment.
