Dear Sara,
of course you're no being paranoid, and the inability of the prisons authorities to keep ANYONE in jail is becoming legendary. Surely you should phone the SA Police and explain your understandable nervousness and ask them to provide protection, as well as for them to check on whether your assailant was one of those who escaped ; and also call the prison and ask the same question.
On the whole, I'd guess that most escaped prisoners either try to put as much distance between them and the prison as they can, or go back to their old turf where they know better places to hide. generally, it wouldn't help them much to visit previous victims. But require the prisons service and the police to do what they're paid to do.
