My 2.5 yr old femal boerboel suffers from hip dysplasia. We live in a townhouse complex with a reltively small garden. She's a lazy dog by nature and doesn't display a need to run etc. How often and for how long can we take her for walks without exhasing her and putting unnecessary strain on the hips?

She should definitely receive some exercise, as it strengthens the muscles and helps to carry the weight instead of carrying all the weight on the bone. Exercise on flat surface (not going up the mountain) is still a very good idea, and should be done quite regularly, even daily. The the distance depends on her, start with short distance and slowly increase it according to what she can tolerate. If she is very stiff and sore thereafter, the distance was too long and do a shorter period until she is used to it again. Also make very sure that she's not overweight, as this places excessive strain on the hips. Also read some of the previous replies regarding ARTHRITIS in the archives. There you will find some information regarding alternative treatment methods, as well as information regarding painkillers.
