Broken Leg
Hi Doc

My puppy (staffie, 5 weeks) broke her knee cap. The vet inserted a pin in her leg and said that it can be left in forever, unless it starts bothering her. Another friend of mine's puppy also broke his leg, but her vet advised her against putting in a pin saying that the dog's leg would not grow.
Please can you advise me as to whether my puppy's leg will grow normally with a pin inserted, or should I have the pin removed.

Thanx

This is not a yes no answer, it very much depends on the fracture. Many fractures will definitely need to be pinned. Unfortunately, certain fractures will run through the growth area of the bone and may result in growth problems later. This is something that can only be told from the specific x-ray of your puppy. Rather speak to your vet again, as he has all the facts and will be best able to advise you.
