My cat
Hi there

I have a cat whom I adore. Due to certian circumstances the cat no longer lives with me and stays with my familiy in a beautiful house in the country with a large and safe garden. This might sound like a starnge question - but do animals forget about their owners? My mom always jokes and says that he knows me, but I am not too sure!

Thanks

Hi Jilly
I don't think anyone really knows for sure, but my feeling is that pets do remember people. Sometimes they show signs of recognition like displaying certain behaviours or games that were played with them, but most times it's just excitement. In the case of cats they have an extremely good sense of smell and I think this helps them to recognise people. Cats often don't show their pleasure in an outward way, but will slink around pretending not to be pleased to see someone. Once this is over they may come up and rub on or mew at the person, perhaps purring and kneading with their paws. It won't do any harm to think your cat knows you, so make a point of giving your cat attention (and maybe treats or a string-chasing game) whenever you see him/her and you may see some rewarding results.
