Urgent pls doc
Hi Doc,
My 9 yr old Rottie/Chow male has bilary (spelling). What can we do for him or help him before having to take him to the vet. He picks up ticks when taken for a run in the veld. He is not seeming to be on deaths door but we can see he is not quite his normal self.

I hope you have taken your dog to the vet! Biliary can be rapidly fatal if not treated (sometimes within hours) and invariably can only get more serious, more life-threatening and more expensive to treat the longer you wait. The basic rule should be, if you suspect biliary, seek help immediately. I hope your dog is fine now.
By the way, biliary is the common name for infection with a blood parasite called Babesia canis, which is carried by a tick. Tick control is therefore the best way to prevent biliary. There is no vaccination available to prevent biliary.
