20 weeks Pregnant - Already gained 8kgs
Hi Doc
I am 20 weeks into my first pregnancy. I have already gained 8kgs. While I admit I wasn't at my ideal weight before falling pregnant - I was just wondering if this is within acceptable levels ?
I have only been to see my gynae once and he didn't comment on the weight gain to date (but then I had not been there before - so he wouldn't know how much I weighed before and didn't ask).
I have not gone overboard on junk food. I do eat more food however!! Would appreciate you feedback.
Thanks

Dear Preggy
If you start your pregnancy with an increased BMI then it is advisable to not gain more than 7-11,5 kg during your pregnancy. You have, thus already gained 8 kg which may be too much. Because it is important for you not to gain more weight, but also ensure that you ingested a balanced diet, I would recommend that you consult clinical dietitian (check the List of Dietitians on this Website or phone 082-593-0276 or send an e-mail to sscharf@nhcltd.com or look in your local telephone directory or Yellow Pages, to find a dietitian in your area) so that she/he will work out a balanced diet which will either help you lose a bit of weight or not gain more AND also provide sufficient nutrients for your developing baby. Also ask the gynae what kind of exercise you are allowed to do without upsetting the pregnancy (e.g. walking or swimming, etc), because regular exercise in the fresh air will help you to control your weight. Click on 'Diet' and 'Eating throughout Life' and read the articles on 'Pregnancy'.
