ANTI-OXIDANTS -- HOW MUCH ?
hello doc
is it possible to have too much antioxidants per day --
so that these will be lost in the urine etc -- and not be useful -- due to " too much "
eg -- if we eat prunes / apples / blue berries / etc .... several times a day
-- could we get too much anti-ox -- that body will just flush out ?

Yes, it is quite possible to ingest too many antioxidants (vitamins and minerals) and that the body will either store such nutrients (vitamin A derived directly from food and also from conversion of the antioxidant called beta-carotene) or excrete them via the urine (vit C). However, it is generally safe if you are obtaining these nutrients from food. If you eat a diet rich in antioxidants and also take vitamin and mineral supplements then it is possible that you may develop conditions such as hypervitaminosis A or D, or kidney stones (with excess vit C). So don't take extra supplements if you are already eating a diet that is rich in antioxidants. The foods you list (apples, prunes and blueberries) should not pose a problem, but don't overdo your intake of foods rich in beta-carotene (pumpkin, butternut, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, etc) as excessive intakes can cause a yellow colouration of the skin as has been documented in some cases. Moderation in everything is the answer.
