DAILY PROTEIN REQUIREMENTS FOR LACTO VEGETARIAN
Greetings!
I am a lacto-vegetarian (although I very seldom have egg-containing foods socially) and I require guidance on my daily protein requirements. If posssible, please provide me with a chart of the various vegetable proteins, their daily required quantities and caloric value. I am 46 years old with HBP and a cholesterol problem and am obese. I urgently required assistance. Many thanks. Pam

Dear Pam
If you visit www.sahealthinfo.co.za and go to Nutrition, you can look up the energy and protein contents of most foods eaten in SA expressed per 100g portion. Seeing that you suffer from three medical conditions, I would recommend that you consult a clinical dietitian (check the List of Dietitians on this Website or phone 082-593-0276 or send an e-mail to sscharf@nhcltd.com or look in your local telephone directory or Yellow Pages, to find a dietitian in your area). The dietitian will work out a vegetarian diet for you that helps to lower bp and cholesterol and promotes weight loss. If your dr gives permission, I would also recommend that you start doing some form of exercise, such as going for brisk walks every day for 30 or more minutes (increasing how fast and fat you walk as you lose weight and get fitter), to lower bp and weight.
Best regards
