depression & weight & no energy to exercise
Dear Dietdoc

ive spent most of my teenage & adult years obsessing about my weight and body image.i obsess over every piece of food that passes my mouth, from a carrot to a diet colddrink to a sucking sweet.i feel i have no will power!granted im only 23 but i dont lead the life of a 23 yr so obsessed that when i gain any weight(btwn 3-6kg's),i refuse to socialise or do anything but stay at home bcos i refuse to get dressed.
it triggers a depression where i dont have the energy for anything let alone exercise.the worst part is that i know i have a healthy balanced diet with the dd exception & when i exercise the weight falls off me.the thing is i cant bring myself to exercise these days & i just feel like im expanding.i started a new job this year & im thinking of quitting bcos i hate going everyday. i just cant wait to get home & get into bed.I know this lifestyle is so unhealthy & unsustainable.i am on medication for depression but its not helping much.i have spoken to cybershrink but id like to hear what you have to say
please advise

Dear Reader
It is important that you also receive psychotherapy for your depression to help you to learn to cope with this disease which is ruining your eating and exercises patterns. Did Cybershrink advise you who to contact? If not, then I would suggest that you either ask your gp to refer you to a clinical psychologist or that you phone a centre that treats Eating Disorders, such as Tara Hospital in Joburg, or Netcare Rehabilitation (011) 489-111. However, it may help to also phone the Kenilworth Clinic in CT at (021) 797-1400 and to ask them for a reference in the area where you live.
