Dear Lucy
Your daughter needs to increase the total amount of carbohydrate she eats during the day because carbs are still the best source of energy and will not make her fat. Whenever she does strenuous exercise (dancing and sport) she needs to have an energy bar before she starts and then sip an energy drink (Lucozade, Powerade, Energade or EnerG) during exercise to keep her energy levels up. She will need to experiment with these drinks to see which one agrees best with her. After exercise she can also have a carbohydrate snack such as fruit juice, fruit or crackers with jam. Readily available carbs replenish the glycogen that is stored in the liver and muscles and will help her to recover. If you click on 'Fitness' at the top of this page and then on 'Nutrition' you will find a comprehensive series of articles on 'Diets for sportsmen and women' which you can use as a guideline.
