Diet for Immune System
Hi Doctor. I was reading some of your articles about the immunt system.

I am currently on second line TB medicatio nand i have been on TB medication since April 2006. I still have 8 months to go.

Can you please advise me on what i can do to minimise the bad effects of all the antibiotics that i need to take and what I can do to strengthen my body. I was told by my GP that I should eat lots of yoghurt as the TB medication reduces the amount of good bacteria in the body.

Thank you.

Dear Astound
The basic principles of boosting the immune system start with eating a balanced diet which is rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, contains plenty of milk and dairy products (esp yoghurt that contains live cultures - check on the labels), lean meat, fish and eggs, whole grains and unprocessed cereals (brown rice, unsifted maize meal, high-bran cereals which are fortified with vitamins and minerals, wholewheat or brown bread, etc) and legumes (dry cooked or canned beans, peas, lentils or soya) and poly- or monounsaturated fats and oils (soft margarine and olive or canola oil). You can also buy 'good' microorganisms at the chemist or health shops (e.g. Bifidoflora of Intestiforte) to replenish the good bacteria that are killed by the antibiotics you have to take. In addition it may be a good idea to take a complete vitamin and mineral supplement such as Centrum or Supradyn (buy at chemist). Also get as much rest as possible to help your body fight the infection.
I do hope that you will be much better soon
