DOC PLEASE A DIET FOR A TEENAGER ON A CONTRACEPTIVE PILL
Hi there, could you please advise of a diet for my fifteen year old daughter who is on 'the pill' to eradicate a very heavy period. She is afraid she is going to put on weight.

Thanks very much

Dear Laura
Is your daughter overweight at the moment, or does she think she is going to gain weight on the pill? If she is of the latter opinion, she should keep in mind that not everyone who uses contraceptive pills gains weight. So going on a diet before there are any signs of weight gain sounds over-reactive to me. Let's first wait and see how she reacts. In the meanwhile she should do regular exercise (running, jogging, skipping, cycling, swimming, join a gym or Walk for Life) if she wants to prevent weight gain (that may never happen) and also to assist with the regulation of her period. If she should gain weight then she can try an energy-reduced, low-fat, high-fibre diet (click on 'Diet' at the top of this page, 'Weight loss' , ‘The right approach' and then on 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of such a diet). She needs to add another cup of fat-free milk to this diet to ensure that she obtains sufficient calcium for her increased needs at this time of her life.
Best regards
