Feeding toddler
Hi there Diet Doc

My 3 year old boy won't eat!!! He eats cucumber, cheese, yogurts, grapes, apples (actually this is all he lives on) and he drinks plenty of milk! He eats normally at creche (whatever is put in front of him) but at home he won't eat off the table with us. He seems very healthy (runny nose here and there), weighs 19 kg's , so I can't even say he is underweight. I've got him on a supplement (viral choice) and people have told me not to stress because he is flourishing so nicely, but he is not getting protein and starch and all the other good things in! Any tips!

Dear Mommy
I think your child is getting a lot of the nutrients he requires from the milk (rich in protein, minerals like calcium, B vitamins etc). The milk also fills him up thus not leaving an appetite for other foods. In addition he is eating food at the creche and is probably tired when he gets home, so it is not surprising that he does not want to eat more. Does he also not eat anything over weekends when he does not go to creche? If this is so, then you need to reduce his milk intake so that he has space for other foods. Don't stress that he is eating too little, rather that he is eating an unbalanced diet. He already weighs as much as a 5-year-old, so you also need to take care that he does not become overweight. I think you need to reduce his milk intake and replace it with other foods, esp some lean meat, fish and eggs to ensure that he gets enough iron and zinc. Click on 'Child' at the top of this page and then on 'Nutrition' and read all the articles on toddlers' diets, which will give you an idea of what foods he should be eating and what quantities.
