Dear Lesley
I trust that the dr who diagnosed your hiatus hernia has prescribed the necessary medication to prevent acid reflux and pain? If not, go back to the dr and ask him/her for such medications and tell the dr about the pain you suffer. A hiatus hernia is a condition where part of the digestive tract bulges out through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This causes stomach acid to push up into the oesophagus and cause damage (acid erosion). Hiatus hernia is usually treated with antacids that coat the oesophagus and stomach to decrease contact of acid with sensitive tissues, or in serious cases by an operation to correct the defect. Nowadays hiatus hernia operations are less dangerous and much more successful than in the past because so-called key-hole surgery is often used which is not as invasive as the older operations. Please consult a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area) for a diet prescription which meets your specific requirements. The reaction to irritant foods in hiatus hernia is often an individual reaction - some patients need to cut out white bread, others react to brown bread. It is, therefore, important for the dietitian to do a diet history to find out which foods specifically cause you distress and then to cut them out.
