Iron deficiency
I am currently having a series of ferrotin injections to boost my iron stores. Other than red meat (not interested) spinach and marmite, what are the foods I should be eating?
Thanks
Thanks
Dear Anaemic
Unfortunately the best sources of readily available iron are: liver, red meat, poultry, fish, and egg yolk. The iron in plant foods such as spinach is combined with chemicals called phytates which bind the iron and make it highly unavailable for uptake in the human body. You can use iron-fortified cereals, dried fruit and legumes, but your best sources are still meat and liver. If you are vegetarian you should ask your dr to prescribe an iron-folic acid-supplement which you can use on a regular basis.
Best regards
