low gi diet
I have been reading up on the internet about the Low GI Diet and l found a website that says that foods with no carbohydrates such as eggs, tuna, alcohol, etc, have no GI value ( obviously). What l want to know is how do you know if these such foods are good on a Low GI diet plan, how much protein you need to incorporate in the diet per day, and what effect protein has on ones blood glucose levels??

I disagree with the Websites that say that eggs, tuna, etc have no GI - they do have a low GI and alcohol has a very high GI. The basic principles of a low-GI diet are that you eat carbohydrates with a low-GI wherever possible and combine carbs with protein-rich foods to lower the GI of meals. Thus having low-fat milk or yoghurt with a high-GI cereal for breakfast will lower the GI of the meal. You would still have to include the daily RDA for protein, namely 56 g of protein a day in a low-GI diet. The problem is that most protein foods can be rich in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol, so it is a good idea to select low-fat proteins for your diet (low-fat or fat-free milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, lean meat, poultry without the skin, fish, fish canned in brine, eggs prepared so that they do not add large quantities of fat to the diet, e.g. poached or boiled, and legumes that are rich in protein but have a low-GI because they have a high dietary fibre content (canned beans, dry, cooked beans, peas, lentils and soya). Protein slows down the absorption of food thus causing a gradual increase in blood sugar and insulin levels.
